What is dry eye disease?

Understanding Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease is a persistent condition that occurs when your eyes aren’t receiving the lubrication they need to stay comfortable and healthy. This often results from either an insufficient production of tears or tears that lack the essential quality required for effective moisture.

Tears consist of three layers that work together to maintain eye hydration and comfort:

  • Oily Layer: Reduces evaporation of tears, keeping them on the eye surface longer.
  • Watery Layer: Delivers nutrients and hydration to the eyes.
  • Mucus Layer: Helps tears adhere to the surface of the eyes, providing smooth and even coverage.

Balance or deficiency in one of these layers can disrupt the tear film, leading to the discomfort associated with dry eye disease.

The Importance of Meibomian Glands

A primary cause of dry eye disease is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Located along the eyelid edges, these glands produce the essential oils that prevent rapid tear evaporation. When blockages occur in the meibomian glands, the tear film lacks the oil it needs, causing tears to evaporate too quickly and resulting in dry, uncomfortable eyes.
